The Lamborghini Sián has been introduced as the latest hybrid supercar from the Italian automaker, featuring an electric powertrain that makes it the “fastest Lamborghini of all time”. The vehicle was unveiled before the start of the Frankfurt Motor Show 2019, and marks the first time that Lamborghini has produced a hybrid model for commercial sale.
The Lamborghini hybrid model boasts a V12 engine that generates 785 horsepower, and an additional 34 horsepower from the electric motor. Together, they produce a whopping 819 horsepower (or 602 kilowatts), making it the most powerful Lamborghini to date, as claimed by the manufacturer.
Lamborghini is making strides towards electrification with the introduction of their new hybrid car, despite previously teasing electric sports car concepts such as the Terzo Millennio. The CEO of Lamborghini, Stefano Domenicali, believes that the Sián not only delivers impressive hyper-car design and engineering today, but also sets the stage for Lamborghini to become a super sports car brand for years to come. In light of the growing desire and necessity for hybridization, the Sián marks the company’s first move towards electrification and will accelerate the development of their next-generation V12 engine.
The Sián boasts a groundbreaking feature- the first-ever usage of a supercapacitor for hybridization. This innovation has led to the development of a storage system that can hold ten times more power than a lithium-ion battery. The supercapacitor is situated in the bulkhead between the cockpit and engine and is lighter and three times more powerful than a battery that produces the same amount of energy. The entire powertrain of the Sián weighs a mere 34 kilograms, giving it the ability to go from zero to 62 miles per hour in under 2.8 seconds, which is the lowest weight-to-power ratio ever seen in a Lamborghini V12 vehicle.
The Lamborghini Sián is an incredibly fast car, with the ability to go over 217 miles per hour. Its name, Sián, comes from the Bolognese dialect and means “flash” or “lightning.” Additionally, the car has a regenerative braking system that allows it to recharge its energy storage system every time it brakes.
Inspired by the iconic Lamborghini Countach, the Sián model flaunts a sleek and modern design with sharp edges and aerodynamic wings. While it maintains a clean and minimalist look, it also introduces innovative features such as its unique aero wings. The back of the car showcases the signature hexagonal design associated with Lamborghini, with six hexagonal tail lights that pay homage to the Countach.
The vehicle boasts a sleek and sporty appearance, with a front bumper featuring an integrated carbon fibre splitter and Y-shaped headlights inspired by the Lamborghini Terzo Millennio. To maximize aerodynamic efficiency, airflow is directed through the front splitters and over the rear spoiler, facilitated by side air intakes and outlets. Additionally, the car is equipped with active cooling vanes on the rear that activate when the smart-material elements respond to the exhaust system’s temperature, rotating to cool the vehicle down.
Only a total of 63 Lamborghini Sián models are going to be produced as a tribute to the year the company was established, 1963. Every single model will be customized by its owner in order to make it one-of-a-kind. According to Mitja Borkert, the Head of Design at Lamborghini, the quickest Lamborghini has to be both a visual and acoustic delight, mesmerizing both the onlookers and the drivers.
According to Borkert, the Sián may have drawn inspiration from the Countach, but it is futuristic rather than a throwback. The car’s exclusivity is further elevated by the option for each of the 63 owners to personalize their vehicle through collaboration with Borkert and the Centro Stile team. So not only will these individuals own the fastest Lamborghini, but they will also have a one-of-a-kind version.
In preparation for the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show 2019, Lamborghini has unveiled its latest creation, the Lamborghini Sián. This top-of-the-line vehicle features a unique green body with electric gold accents, achieved through a multi-layered paint job containing golden flakes and crystals. The interior is upholstered in aniline leather in the shade of Terra di Sant’Agata Bolognese, and includes 3D printed components that are new to Lamborghini production. The Sián marks Lamborghini’s first step into the world of electrification, following in the footsteps of other car manufacturers such as Lotus, which released its fully electric Lotus Evija in July 2019.
